Assignment #2 Study Activities
Find one or more examples of an IQ test. Examine the content of the test and locate any items
which you think will be unfair to bilinguals in your region. Examine both the language and the
cultural content of the IQ test. 
Answer:
Question: Which of the following can be arranged into a 5-letter English word?

Answer: b. rails and c. motto
This question could be difficult for someone who is bilingual because they might
think the scrambled word is a word or the students can’t make a word with the scrambled
letters. The content of the question is also in English so they might be confused about the word
and the meaning of scramble. The IQ test is to test the IQ of the bilinguals in their stronger
language or both languages. This was a disadvantage for the bilinguals because they were
tested in their weaker language. For the cultural content of the test, it would be unfair to test
them in their stronger language. The content can be difficult for bilinguals or multilingual
because they could have trouble understanding what the question is asking.

Answer: d.
Answer: This could be difficult for bilinguals because they might not know what an
analogy is. The content and language of the question above can be difficult for bilinguals
because they might not know what the question means. But it could also be easy to the
bilinguals if they speak well in English and their other language.

The article The Future of Education is in Two Languages was a very interesting read. In the article, Fabice talks about three objectives leaning towards bilingualism. The first objective is to espouse cultures specific to families and linguistic communities and promote this cultural heritage as an important part of the mosaic of society. The second objective is to help facilitate reconciliation between parents and schools and encourage a fruitful dialogue between parents, school administrators, and educational professions. The third and final objective is to promote a social, economic, and cultural environment that is respectful of all and helps to bridge the gulfs that divide us today.
