Week 7: Tongue Tied Reflections

Prospectus (pg.22)

Reflection: This poem made me very sad when I read it. This boy grew up on a reservation living in an adobe house with no running water. He would feed on his mother’s breast, drink goatmilk and cornmeal, and some days without food. I couldn't tell the way the boy was treated but the way he lived was very sad. He ate with his fingers washed his hair with yucca root and only spoke his language.  There was not much around where he lived, besides puppies, lizards, and the lamb. He hopes to learn English one day and I hope so too.

Learning Silence (pg.23)

Reflection: This poem was an interesting one to read. In the first paragraph, I could feel how scared Maria was even though she’s only in 1st grade. Maria was afraid of everything from raising her and, asking for the bathroom pass, the bigger kids, but especially Miss Barton who does not like her. It seemed like Maria was a good student, but I feel so bad because she is terrified of her teacher. I remember when I was in 1st grade, I was also afraid of my teacher. I wasn’t a quiet kid, but my teacher scared me a lot during the school year.
